How the Internet of Things (IoT) benefits enterprises in Hong Kong

labelIoT use case – Preventing asset damage in property management

In the coming years, analysts predict that trillions of sensors will be connected worldwide via the internet of things (IoT) delivering countless benefits to business, and society in general.

At HKT | 1O1O, we already assembled a comprehensive portfolio of IoT capabilities. This series of posts outlines how we are working with customers to plan and deploy IoT projects, while identifying key factors worthy of consideration.

// Protect your assets using IoT technology

Water leaks can be a nightmare in property management. Water damage to vital equipment such as elevators, for example, can be hugely expensive and involve lengthy repair times. We worked with a property company to offset the risk with an IoT solution.

// Stay connected in a distributed environment

We helped our customer place special sensors in areas most at risk from leaks, such as in washrooms on every floor. After evaluation, we chose a mix of NB-IoT and Zigbee sensors because they consume less power for transporting data and are relatively easy to install, and provide the flexibility for up-scaling in the future.

The sensors alert the building manager to any leakage the instant unwanted water is detected, thus prompting immediate inspection. The outcome is improved operational efficiency, and a good chance of averting a major crisis.

// Healthy ROI

Technical design is crucial for successful IoT solutions, but enterprises tend to focus more on return on investment (ROI). With this in mind, we took our customer through a detailed 3-year ROI calculation, based on a scenario involving a 20-storey building. The result was that total investment for IoT management amounted to just 10% of the cost of repairing an elevator on just one occasion.

// Enhanced customer satisfaction

This kind of IoT deployment also enhances the overall customer experience and more in-time management at the points of need for a property management company, while boosting operational efficiency, and enabling better allocation of resources based on analysis of collected data.
